Applications Open for Texas Partners in Policymaking
Are you passionate about advocating for people with disabilities? Texas Partners in Policymaking has opened applications for the class of 2025! This specialized leadership and advocacy training program provides individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) and family members of those with DD the chance to develop into impactful advocates and leaders within the disability community.
Texas Partners in Policymaking is the premier leadership training program for disability advocates in Texas. The program aims to enhance advocacy skills, increase understanding of policies and systems, and promote the active involvement of participants in policymaking processes. Organized by the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities (TCDD), it aims to advance systems change – creating, working toward, and achieving a vision of shared values regarding people with disabilities in communities across Texas.
Hear from Past Participants
We believe that Partners is the next step for all disability advocates in Texas. But don’t take our word for it! Hear what past program participants have to say:
“Partners gave me the confidence and knowledge necessary to talk to legislators and truly understand the nuances that come with trying to get effective disability legislation passed. I know this is information I will carry with me throughout the rest of my career and life as a parent advocate.”
“I have been a self-advocate for a long time. This program taught me new avenues and ideas. I hope to increase my legislative advocacy.”
“This course opened my eyes to so many hidden facets that can influence the lives of the DD community and the ways that we, as everyday citizens, as leaders, and as parents, can affect positive change through policy and programs. I have already started dreaming of big ways I can share the knowledge that I have gained through Texas Partners in Policymaking with others in the future.”
Through the program, participants will acquire the information and skills needed to partner with policymakers and advocate for important disability issues at local, state, and federal levels. Participants will also develop personal projects to improve the lives of people with DD in their communities.
The program consists of six two-day training sessions held monthly from September to March. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Sessions are held online via video conference. In addition to the weekend sessions, participants attend monthly online meetings held on weekday evenings. Participants are required to attend all training sessions. Between sessions, participants engage in self-paced assignments, real-life advocacy activities, and community projects.
There is no program fee to participate in Texas Partners in Policymaking. Program costs are covered for participants by TCDD.
